Richard Whittington is Professor of Strategic Management at Oxford University’s Saïd Business School where he has headed the Strategy, Innovation and International Business Area three times and served as Deputy Director. He has held visiting positions at Harvard Business School, HEC Paris, the University of Toulouse and the University of Technology Sydney. He has been a member of the Strategic Management Society since 1992, served as Director-at-Large for the SMS, and co-chaired both the 2010 SMS Special Conference in Finland and the 2022 Strategic Management Society Conference in London. Richard has worked on several initiatives within the Society, being co-founder of the Strategy Practice Interest Group, co-chair of the first SMS pre-conference doctoral workshop and co-chair of the Body of Knowledge working group for the Society’s professional certification initiative. He was a co-founder of the Academy of Management SAP Interest Group, of which he is a past chair, and he served to 2024 on the Academy’s Strategy Division Executive Committee. He is a former Associate Editor of the Strategic Management Journal. His work has achieved over 55,000 Google Scholar citations, appearing in leading journals such as Administrative Science Quarterly, Organization Science and the Strategic Management Journal. He has published singly or jointly eleven books, including a history of strategy: ‘Opening Strategy: Professional Strategists and Practice Change, 1960 to Today’ (OUP, 2019). He is committed to teaching, with his co-authored textbook ‘Exploring Strategy’ ranked by the Financial Times 2021 Teaching Power index as the most influential strategy textbook worldwide (recorded on nearly 3,000 course syllabi). He has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of St. Gallen and is a 2024 co-winner of the Joanne Martin ‘trailblazer’ award from the Academy of Management’s OMT Division.
