It is one of the primary functions of the Strategic Management Society to convene and conduct meetings and conferences for the professionals in the field of strategic management. The Society was founded after some pioneers in the field had successfully brought an interested group of individuals together for meetings in London (1981) and then Montreal (1982). Since then, the SMS has held Annual International Conferences at various sites around the world, typically alternating between North America and Europe. Each conference addresses a current theme and brings together leading experts in the field from around the globe.
In addition to the annual international conferences, the SMS has responded to member interest in special topics through its introduction of a series of smaller, regionally based meetings addressing more specific industry or subject themes. These Special Conferences are typically co-organized between the SMS, an Interest Group and a group of local individuals.
